REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

As you all know, we, at Oasis Academy, try to be as green as possible!  At Thursday's Board of Director's meeting, Jane Anderson gave a presentation to the board about recycling and what our options are here in Fallon.  Jane shared some very interesting facts with us through her presentation, one of which is that our largest import to China is our trash!  They then sort through it, recycle it and sell it back to us!

We do recycle here at school, but we would like you to encourage your families to do so at home too.   Currently these are the items that we can recycle here in Fallon:

  • Plastics, separated into #1 and #2 (yogurt cups, fabric softener soap bottles, plastic water bottles, plastic soda bottles)
  • All cardboard (cereal boxes, toilet paper tubes, corrugated boxes)
  • White paper (flat)
  • Shredded paper (in bags)
  • Steel (rinsed cans and lids)
  • Aluminum (cans, foil, yogurt lids, cat food cans, etc.)
  • Newspaper (inserts are fine)
  • Telephone books)
  • Plastic bags
If you would like ideas on setting up a home recycling center, or have general questions, please contact Susan Weikel or Jane Anderson (janderson@oasisacademyfallon.us).  Trust me, if you get your children on board and teach them about recycling, you won't have do a thing- they love it!  In Japan, on trash day, you pay for your trash removal based on weight, as a result people recycle everything and finish the week with 1 small bag of trash. . . . I think that would motivate me to do a better job of recycling!

Finally, did you know that more than 20 million Hershey's Kisses are wrapped a day, using 133 square miles of aluminum foil?  All that foil is recyclable, and most of us just throw it away!  Happy recycling!
