Governor Sandoval's Visit

I am sure most of you are aware that Governor Sandoval's Office chose to sign his Proclamation of School Choice at Oasis Academy, a huge honor to be sure!  What you may not know, it that earlier this year our kindergarden, first, and second graders did a project called, "Where Do We Live and Who Is In Charge?" This is a bulletin board representing a few pieces of that project.  The timing was ideal because our 8th grade students starting taking a Civics Class second semester.

Mrs. Loop made sure her first graders understood that the people who vote are in charge!

First stop was the lunch room where our K-4 kids were having lunch.  It was impressive to see how many of them remembered who was in charge of our state.  I asked the question, "Who is in charge of our state?"  I was looking for the word governor, but one little first grader, when called upon, pointed and said, "He is!"

You would have been proud of your little ones, they listened and were so respectful!

Governor Sandoval told them that he went to second grade at Northside, so he has a soft spot in his heart for Fallon.  He also gave every student and staff member a Governor's coin (as I am sure you are well aware).

I started to sweat a little bit when he asked,  "Are there any questions?"  Right out of the shoot, "When's your birthday?"  Very important information when you are a second grader.  As you can imagine, when he said August 5th the hand of every child whose birthday or immediate families birthday was in August shot into the air to let him know!  We had to cut the Q & A short.

One of my favorite moments came when one of our first graders came up and let the Governor know, "My mom's in the army."  The Governor shook his hand and said, "Well tell her thank you for me."

Next we headed to Mrs. Mori's room where we crammed 80 fifth through eighth graders in to witness this historic event.   This might be a good time to tell you they were PERFECT! I was so proud of them.

After telling the student's a little bit about himself, he explained the Proclamation of School Choice and read it out loud to the students.

Then he signed it!  I pointed out to the students that this could surely go on the timeline of important events in their lives; not many people can say they have had this experience.

It was a great day!  A proud moment for our staff, families, and board of directors who have worked so hard to make our first year a success.  Parents you can be extremely proud of your children! If you would like, you can watch the entire visit with the older kids next week when we add it to the blog.
